In 2007 NARGA commissioned Price Waterhouse Coopers to study grocery retail. Here’s some of the interesting statistics uncovered in that report.

Supermarket and grocery turnover: About 29% of retail turnover.
Supermarket and grocery revenues, year to January 2007: AU $63 billion
Total grocery revenues (including via non-traditional routes): AU$74 billion
Total Woolworths and Coles grocery sales: AU$59 billion
Grocery market share held by Woolworths and Coles: 79%
Average Full Time Employees per store (supermarket chains): 65
Average Full Time Employees per store (independent sector): 32
